Want to Get Away? Head North to Go South!

St. Augustine, FL

Lots of South Floridians are looking for a means to escape, even for a couple of days. While the Keys are a famous go-to, why not consider going up the coast? Five days makes for a great road trip, starting in the Miami area and heading up to Savannah and Charleston! With incredible houses and fantastic food, these two cities are not only charming but also chock full of history and culture.

Day 1: Leave early in the morning. Head north to St. Augustine, where you can stop for a saunter around the old town, a swim in the sea, or a hot plate of fried green tomatoes at The Floridian. Continue on to Savannah for an evening meandering along the river.

Day 2: Rent bikes and explore Savannah. Be sure to hit all of the city’s 22 lovely squares and pedal under a canopy of oak trees along Savannah’s prettiest lane, Jones Street. Stop at Leopold’s for a scoop of peach flavored ice cream. Enjoy a fantastic dinner at one of the town’s highly rated restaurants, such as Elizabeth on 37th, where diners enjoy delightful dishes inside a traditional Victorian style home.

Day 3: Enjoy a yerba mate and a pastry at the charming Mate Factor Cafe, a short stroll from Forsyth Square. Head out toward Charleston by 9am to arrive at Beaufort, South Carolina for an 10:00am walking tour of the incredible homes while learning civil war history with Janet. Have lunch in town before making your way to Charleston, a mere 45 minute drive. Upon arrival in Charleston, wander the City Market and the Riverfront. Meander through the cobblestone streets to capture images of the stunning houses. Freshen up and enjoy a rooftop drink at The Dewberry before dinner at any one of Charleston’s fantastic Southern Style restaurants! We like Magnolias for its fried green tomatoes!

Day 4: At your leisure! Rent bikes, hit museums, tour the old homes, shop til you drop. There are simply so many things to do in town! If you’ve got the time, consider a tour of the plantation houses just outside of town. If you’re looking for something a bit different for lunch, stop at Leyla Fine Lebanese, which serves up incredibly fresh & traditional salads and dips. This evening, wander up and down King Street and enjoy the action. Check out live jazz at Eli’s Table. Finish your trip with a feast of local seafood at The Ordinary.

Day 5: Head home! Feeling hungry? Fuel up halfway with Dim Sum in Jacksonville.
